And humorous. Actually, informative ...Interesting. And humorous. Actually, informative as regards your personal prefs. Let me respond by ingredient.

Buns - some are definitely better than others. We seldom buy commercial "air-puffed" bread products, preferring something more substantial. That said, I don't think I ever rejected a bun :)

Pasta - I'm with you. Carbs in different shapes. Give me a hearty Bolognese sauce. Raised in an Italian town, I've had some great dishes and sauces. Robust. But to get excited over pasta alone, no.

Rice - again, I'm with you. I like fried rice (Asian restaurants) but you can have the "Spanish rice." Now, rice pudding, I'll take seconds on that.

Herbs - I'm really surprised at you regarding nutmeg, cinnamon, mint and ginger. I know it's just a matter of palate and taste, but to me those are some essential herbs. What, no hot buttered rum? Can't make that without nutmeg. What about baked goods? Also, I could give you a KILLER pasta sauce recipe that has….nutmeg! But like chocolate in mole', it's not something that's real prevalent. Excellent sauce. Ginger is essential for a lot of Asian dishes. Love the candied stuff.

No raspberries in salads? Oh….my wife makes a spinach salad with raspberries, walnuts and a homemade raspberry vinaigrette. It would be on the menu of my "last meal."

Anise - yeah, you can have that. As a kid, I used to like root beer. Then I got introduced to Pepto Bismol and that was the end of that.

There are without a doubt some very specific "acquired tastes" out there - like sashimi and kimchee - and people with the "bitter gene" (they can't eat cruciferous veggies) but just about everything is good for me. I've known a LOT of guys who were "meat & taters" and I just couldn't believe they intentionally limited their diet that much.

Well, lunch is on. Smoked sausage on a "regular" bun, siracha potato chips, sliced apples, and a hearty beer. Cheers!

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08201647053123651818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-702706295876851447.post-91162694607975477732014-07-16T15:35:39.117-07:002014-07-16T15:35:39.117-07:00Hmmm sounds kinda like Pigs in a blanket. I have sent things back, I have even complained to head offices of certain chain restaurants.. and received gift cards in response.

There are a couple of restaurants that I really do like to go to, even though I think they are overpriced. That said, I'm as 'picky' and 'snooty' as you are - because I'm one of a rare batch of North American males who actually grows a lot of what he eats and knows how to *cook*, my tastes and opinions run close to yours.

First, I don't order junk food. Ever. I'll starve before I eat at a McDonald's. Food is necessary to *feed* the person - brain, muscles, etc. - and the link between fast food and decreased brain/body function is too well established to ignore.

Second, I'm a sucker for hotel restaurants. The better hotels actually have pretty decent chow - even if it *is* overpriced by most standards - so survival on-the-road needn't go much further than the hotel lobby (assuming you're not staying at a place where bring-your-own-linen is a requirement for the bed)

Last, I don't eat at chains - ever. No matter how much a customer wants Buffalo Wild Wings, T.G.I. Friday's, Hooters or Applebee's, all of those places are one step above junk-food.

If I've got time before a trip, I'll do some research to see what's on the other end of the plane-flight; some of the best locally-owned establishments are hidden gems which bear seeking-out.

(Corollary: If the county in which an establishment is located posts their restaurant-inspections, I *always* read those. I never did that, but I was powerless to stop the cooks from doing something. If you aren't happy, it is likely best to just refuse the meal and leave after complaining.
